New police officers in Nigeria have not been paid for six months

A survey conducted by the BBC in parts of Nigeria has revealed that some 10,000 police officers hired last year have not been paid.

For the past six months, they have not been paid since they took office in May.

This forced most of them to become beggars in the community for a living.

However, a source at the country's police service said they were aware of the problem and were trying to resolve it.

An anonymous source told the BBC that even when they finished training they were given nothing, "except for a few of us who came later".
