Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo is on his way to Ethiopia to mediate between the government and the Tigray regional government.
His move comes just hours after Uganda’s president offered peace talks before later deleting his Twitter account.
The Ethiopian government has made it clear it will not negotiate with the TPLF – the regional government – saying the party has rejected a peace plan introduced two years ago.
“Former President Obasanjo is on his way to Addis Ababa for talks,” Obasanjo’s spokesman Kehinde Akinyemi was quoted as saying by AFP.
He added that he was “going to intervene,” but did not elaborate.
“Any attempt to intervene will further fuel crime and lawlessness,” said Ethiopian Foreign Minister Redwan Hussein.
“No country will keep an eye on any part of it after it appears to have rockets and missiles and has vowed to attack.”
