A Sri Lankan lawmaker and former minister has made headlines after eating raw fish during a press conference, in an attempt to show that fish does not spread coronary heart disease.
Dilip Wedaarachchi, a member of parliament from the opposition party and a former fisheries minister, cut the raw fish out at a rally on Tuesday, to encourage people to continue buying fish.
Mr Wedaarachchi said the cholera epidemic had led to a decline in the country’s fish trade, which was a major source of income.
This is not the first time a senior Sri Lankan official has done something unusual.
There was a time when a minister climbed a coconut tree to draw people’s attention to the coconut shortage on the island.
