The fire that has been raging for five months in India has been extinguished

A five-month-old fire at an oil well in northeastern India has finally been extinguished on Sunday.

The AFP news agency reports that Oil India workers have been battling the blaze in Assam since an explosion in June, in which an oil well exploded and began pumping crude gas.

Two workers were killed in the blast. One person later died in September after an explosion at the scene.

Experts from Canada, Singapore and the United States joined forces to put out the blaze.

Oil India spokesman Tridiv Hazarika said the fire had been "completely extinguished".

"The fire has been extinguished and now it has been extinguished," he said in an interview with AFP. "There are no more fires in the well now and it will be monitored for 24 hours to see if there is any more gas."

Thousands of villagers in Tinsukia have been evacuated to camps after the blaze broke out in June 2020.
