Boko Haram kills three loggers, arrests 40 in Borno

Suspected Boko Haram militants have killed three loggers and abducted about 40 others in northeastern Nigeria's Borno State.

Volunteers in the area told the AFP news agency that the loggers had been cut down in Wulgo Forest near the Cameroonian border.

The area is known for its militant activities, with many camps.

The assailants went to Wulgo Forest in search of wood but did not return until late in the evening, prompting the guerrillas to follow them, only to find three bodies shot in the back.

"In all likelihood, all three men were shot after attempting to escape because all of them were shot in the past," said a local guerrilla leader.

There have been no cell lines in the area for a long time as a result of Boko Haram attacks and the breaking of poles. This has forced locals to use Cameroonian routes.

Boko Haram militants have intensified their attacks on loggers and farmers, accusing them of providing information to soldiers and militants.

Authorities are warning deer to stay out of the bush, but reports say they are being forced to do so because plants are being cut in peaceful areas.

Boko Haram violence has killed more than 36,000 people and displaced more than 1 million, according to the United Nations.
