'From outside' the oil tanker was attacked in Saudi Arabia

A group of people from outside Saudi Arabia attacked a Singapore-flagged oil tanker, sparking a fire and a massive explosion on Monday.

The BW Rhine was unloading oil at the Saudi port of Jeddah when the incident occurred.

"The attack resulted in a major explosion and a fire," the company that owns the Hafnia ship said in a statement.

The company added that the crew had extinguished the fire and no one was injured, although some parts of the boat were damaged.

"The oil in the tanker may have leaked, but this has not been confirmed and research has shown that the amount of oil in the tank is the same as that taken earlier before the attack," he said. Hafnia.

The BW Rhine can carry 60,000 to 80,000 tons of oil, according to Hafnia. It contained 84 percent of the fuel used at the time of the incident, company owners said.

The port of Jeddah, is the main port in the Red Sea and the center through which Saudi oil giant Saudi Aramco distributes oil.

Rebels 'attack'

The attack comes after a Greek oil tanker exploded at the Saudi port of Shuqaiq, an attack blamed on Saudi forces on Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Aramco said the attack made a large hole in the fuel tank, which caused a huge explosion and fire.

The attack highlights the threat posed by Saudi oil wells.
