WAHALA!! Buhari fires Niger Delta commission chairman

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has fired the acting chairman of the Niger Delta Development Corporation (NDDC), Kemebradikumo Pondei.

A statement from Buhari’s media aide, Femi Adesina, said Effiong Awa, the commission’s finance director, has been appointed as the new chairman.

Adesina said Awa would continue to lead the commission until the investigation ordered by Buhari was completed.

“This action is necessary as a result of various orders issued by a Federal High Court on the interim committee of the NDDC,” the statement said.

Buhari appointed Pondei, a health professor, as chairman of the commission in February but his presidency was in turmoil.

Nigerian students abroad who have received scholarships through the commission have complained about the harassment and other allegations of corruption against the professor.

That prompted the Federal Parliament to launch a special inquiry, in which Pondei decided to fall while answering questions about the agency’s spending during the coupon law – including that of traveling abroad.
