The Kano State Fire Brigade said 134 people lost their lives in 2020 as a result of 786 fires that broke out in various parts of the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Saidu Muhammad, a spokesperson for the commission, as saying that 633 million naira had also been lost during the year.
The agency also saved 1,077 lives and 2.56 billion naira in assets.
“Most of the fires were caused by accidental workplace and gas boiler and the use of substandard electrical equipment,” he said.
He added that the agency would further train 350 of its staff by 2021 for better performance and advised its owners to “take good care while using fire” to avoid fires.
