Gunmen kill 27 people in Ebonyi State

Reports from southern Nigeria’s Ebonyi State say gunmen have killed at least 27 people in four areas of the state.

State media quoted state Governor David Umahi as expressing shock at the attack while visiting the area, which was allegedly carried out by herdsmen.

As well as the Daily Trust newspaper reported that the governor and other government officials described the attack as revenge, saying two herdsmen had been killed in the area nearly a year ago.

The governor said the people who killed the herdsmen had been arrested, making it impossible to understand the motive behind the recent attack.

The attack affected residents of Nkalaha, Obegu, Amaezu and Umuhuali areas of Ishielu Local Government Area.

However, the newspaper reported that the leaders of the Ebonyi Fulani herdsmen community have denied the allegation that the attack was carried out by their own people.

Although the state police has not commented on the attack so far, reports say a senior police officer has been sent to the area.
